TUSAAG Aborts Strike

The Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has aborted their planned industrial action over their members’ retirement date rollover.

In a statement on January 8, 2024, the Association said the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) had written to direct the Management of Technical Universities to “adhere” to the Roll Over provisions in their Conditions of Service while the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have agreed to enforce it.

This also precedes their meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC), the Minister of Education, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC),
Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), VCTU-G and other stakeholders on Wednesday, January 10.

The meeting will address GTEC’s correspondence, which indicates that it does not consider TUSAAG’s Conditions of Service as a working document.

“In view of the interventions made by the Minister of Education, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, the GTEC, the FWSC and the commitment of the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana, to fully implement the Roll Over, the NEC of TUSAAG suspends the intended strike action with immediate effect.”

Background
TUSAAG served notice about their industrial action last week over the failure of the management of the technical universities across the country to roll over the retirement date for senior staff members to the end of the academic year.

The Association deemed the action of the management a breach of Article 14(b) and Article 34 of the Conditions of Service (CoS) which respectively state that “A Senior Member shall normally retire from the service of the Technical University at the end of the academic year in which he attains the compulsory retiring age, currently sixty (60)” and “An employee of the University shall retire from the service of the University at the end of the academic year in which he attains the prescribed retiring age.”

“Despite the clarity provided in all our earlier communication, the Management of Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), Sunyani Technical University (STU), Accra Technical University (ATU) and Koforidua Technical University (KTU) have failed to comply fully with the roll-over of the retirement date to the end of the academic year,” President of the Association, Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi, said in a statement.

They intended to strike on January 8.
