Trinidad and Tobago Trades Minister Calls On Asantehene
Trinidad and Tobago’s Trades and Industry Minister, Senator Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, has paid a courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace on her six-day working visit to Ghana.
She came in the company of forty-five members of the business community and government agencies in the island country.
Senator Honourable Gopee-Scoon’s visit to the Palace took place on March 13, 2024, a day after they arrived in the country.
She presented the business delegation to the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and announced their mission to scout for viable trade sectors in the country for collaboration.
It follows the visit of Asantehene to the Caribbean country eight months ago during which he called for enhanced collaboration between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago.
In a speech, Senator Gopee-Scoon revealed that the businessmen and women were in the country in pursuit of multiple collaborations in accordance with the suggestion of the Monarch.
“When His Majesty was in Trinidad and Tobago, at the Emancipation celebrations, in his remarks, he said, ‘Let us hold hands, let us think together, let us pull our resources together for the benefit and improvement of our people,’ and we have acted on his words.
“It’s the reason we have here today 45 members of the business and also the government agencies. This is to follow up on His Majesty’s wishes. We wish for further collaboration between the people of both of our countries.”
The delegation included His Excellency Wendell Vincent Carlton De Landro, Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner to Ghana and Hilton John Mitchell, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the Republic of Ghana.
Also present were Rachael Bissons with the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service, Mr Jade Brown with Bexon Consulting Limited, Mr Sunil Changoor, with Leisurely Travels and Tours and many other Chief Executive Officers of state agencies and private businesses.
Presentation Of Special Gifts
The team were held to a dinner at the residence of the King during which they presented some iconic gifts to the King including a 200-year-old rum from the cask of Caroni fields of Angostura Distillery, the only rum distillery in Trinidad and Tobago.
Presenting them to the King, Senator Gopee-Scoon said, “It is very very special and it is a pleasure to present it to you on behalf of the government and more so on behalf of the people who have come to Ghana to seek collaboration.”
According to her, it is the last cask of Caroni.
She also made a presentation of a painting of Tobago traditional wedding and a photo book of Trinidad and Tobago.
The team is expected to leave on March 7.
Otumfuo Visit To Trinidad and Tobago
In July 2023, Otumfuo made a historic visit to the twin island country at the invitation of the Prime Minister. Among his itinerary was a Trade and Investment Symposium during which His Majesty met the business community of the country and called for trade and investment between Africa and the Caribbean.
