Trade Minister Pledges Year-Round Local Tomato Production Boost

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has pledged the government of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening local tomato production.

She anticipates that this will reduce the risks traders face when travelling outside the country to purchase the commodity, as well as minimise dependence on imports and enhance food security.

“It is our prayer and commitment that Ghana will be able to grow tomatoes throughout the year so that our traders will not have to take such risks beyond our borders,” she stated.

She said this when, together with the Minister for Transport, Bukare Mikpe, she visited the surviving victims of the recent attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso at the 37 Military Hospital.

The two survivors, a male and a female, sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack a few weeks ago and remain on admission.

The Trade Minister also commended the medical team for their dedication and urged them to continue providing quality care to ensure the full recovery of the victims.

Receiving the delegation, the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the hospital, Brigadier General R. Naab, expressed appreciation to the Ministers for the visit and assured them that the injured traders were responding to treatment and would continue to receive the best medical attention.
