There’s No Diplomatic Tension Between Ghana and Burkina Faso- Gov’t
The Government of Ghana has refuted claims that there are strained relations between the country and her neighbour, Burkina Faso as a result of the President’s association with the United States of America (USA).
The claims were made by former President and 2024 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama during a meeting with journalists last week.
At the said meeting, he asserted that the two countries have developed “diplomatic tension” as a result of some commentaries by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his relations with the US and promised to work on it when reelected.
In reaction in a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said the claim is “wholly unfounded and lacks any substantial evidence or merit”.
On the contrary, it said President Akufo-Addo had consciously forged constructive and respectful relations with all nations, including Burkina Faso.
“It is recalled that a ministerial visit to Burkina Faso in December 2022, followed by a visit of H. E. the President in 2023, received the highest level of courtesies and hospitality, and reinforced the commitment of the two fraternal countries to building stronger bonds of cooperation across all fields, for the mutual benefit of our two peoples and our region. Cooperation in the field of security remains crucial in our exchanges.”
It added, “It is crucial to emphasize that Ghana is committed to maintaining cordial and productive diplomatic relationships with Burkina Faso. Our interactions with Burkina Faso are guided by the principles of mutual respect and cooperation.”
The Ministry said the two countries have been collaborating on border-related matters, power generation, transportation, regular exchange programmes and more.
