Ghana’s WASSCE Standard Remains Unchanged – WAEC The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has vouched for the standard of the exam sat by final Ghanaian Senior High School students. According to WAEC, the questions are compiled by officers across the member countries and go through laid-down processes. “The Council wishes to stress that despite the difference in the period for the conduct of the examination, the standard of the examination remains unchanged.” It explained that, “At the end of the examination, International Preliminary Coordination Meetings are held to finalize draft marking schemes. Further, right after the marking exercise, the International Awards Committee meets to determine the grade boundaries for all subjects.” It stressed that the rigorous processes are aimed at ensuring that the examination sat by Ghana only, maintains its international status. It comes after claims that Ghana ceased writing the WASCCE in 2016, contributing to the fallen standard of Ghanaian students. The difference in the schedule for the WASSCE was necessitated by the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the contact hours of students in 2020. While all other WASCCE member countries have reverted to the old calendar of May/June, Ghana has instituted a transitional calendar to join the rest. This year’s examination will commence on August 5 and end on September 27, 2024.
