Universities Senior Staff, Others Suspend Strike

The three labour unions demanding the payment of their Tier 2 pension by the government have called off their industrial strike action after three weeks.

It follows the payment by the government.

The Universities Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana (SSA-UG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) in a joint press statement announced the strike has been suspended.

Their decision to suspend the strike was taken after an engagement with the government and the National Labour Commission (NLC) on February 1.

According to the labour unions, the government has since restored the overtime allowance and paid all outstanding Tier-2 pension arrears with an assurance to resolve all outstanding issues related to Tier-2.

“An emergency National Executives Council (NEC) meeting was held in KNUST on Tuesday, 7th February 2024 to evaluate the state of the strike. NEC passed a resolution to suspend the strike and engage the Government on the roadmap for the payment of the three per cent penalty and the recalculation of accrued interest from 2010 to 2016.”

“Thus, we wish to announce that the ongoing industrial action is suspended with immediate effect.”

Background
The SSA was the first to embark on the strike action on January 18, demanding outstanding Tier 2 contributions with appropriate interest at three per cent penalty rates.

They also demanded the prioritization of the recalculation of accrued interest on tier-2 pensions for 2010-2016, payment of outstanding arrears to retirees, and withdrawal of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) decision to eliminate overtime allowance for senior staff.

They were later joined by the FUSSAG and TEWU.
