E/R: Kukurantumi Police Station Shut Down, Police Personnel Withdrawn After Attack

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Yohuno, has ordered for the immediate withdrawal of police personnel stationed at the Kukurantumi Police Station and the subsequent closure of the facility.
This followed the death of a suspect in police custody, stoking an attack from residents of the community in the Eastern Region on Sunday morning.
“The Eastern Regional Police Command would like to inform the public that following attacks on the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region by some youth of the town, the Inspector-General of Police has directed the withdrawal of all police personnel stationed at Kukurantumi and the close down of the police station,” the police said in a statement.
According to the statement, the suspect identified as Bright Kena was on admission at the Community Hospital when he passed on after his arrest for a case of unlawful entry and stealing.
The irate residents are said to have attacked the Police station and the barracks with stones, clubs and other implements and attempted to set the building on fire on Sunday morning.
A police reinforcement team was called in to restore calm, law and order, the police disclosed, adding that the Eastern Regional Police Command had engaged the deceased’s family and other community leaders to assure them of a thorough investigation into the matter.
“The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the suspect.”
Meanwhile, the police are reviewing video footages of the attack on the police station to identify the perpetrators and arrest them.
“The Command would like to once again urge the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence,” it added.
