DVLA Announces Biometric Documentation Upgrade to Meet International Standards

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) says it will soon upgrade to Biometric International Driver’s Licenses and Biometric International Vehicle Permits.

These new documents will include a bio-data page to fully comply with ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) specifications.

This, it said, has become necessary as International Driver’s licenses (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) issued by the Authority have occasionally been rejected by some foreign countries.

In a notice, it said it was addressing the challenges.

“To ensure worldwide recognition and security, the DVLA will be launching Biometric International Driver’s Licenses and Biometric International Vehicle Permits.”

This strategic upgrade aims to establish a modern, secure, and globally verifiable standard for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles travelling abroad.

It will commence at all DVLA stations across Ghana starting in 2026.

“This initiative is set to equip Ghanaians living abroad with international driving and vehicle documentation that adheres to the highest globally recognised standards.”
