Ashanti Regional Minister Announces Possible Kumasi Central Prison Relocation

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, says authorities are considering relocating the Kumasi Central Prison in the Ashanti Region.

This is part of ongoing discussions led by the Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mubarak focused on decongesting the prison.

He made this known on April 17, 2025, when the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council collaborated with other stakeholders to conduct a health screening exercise for inmates at the Prison as part of the AshantiFest.

Dr. Amoakohene explained that the decision to organize a health screening at the prison was motivated by discussions with the Regional Commander of the Prisons Service and several inmates who participated in a cleanup exercise on March 6.

He highlighted that inmates face numerous health challenges, particularly issues related to overcrowding and inadequate feeding.
