We Will Soon Ban Styrofoam Importation and Production for Packaging- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has served notice for an imminent ban on the importation and production of Styrofoam also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS) in Ghana for packaging.

According to him, it is one of the country’s polluters and thereby a ban as a countermeasure.

Instead of Styrofoam, he proposed migration onto paper packaging or aluminium foil. This was announced while speaking at the Tree Planting event on June 5, 2025.

“We are going to ban the importation of Styrofoam for plastics. We have to use paper packaging or aluminium foil for packing our food. I’m informing the manufacturing and importers of Styrofoam.

“With the Ministry of Lands, soon we are going to ban the importation of Styrofoam and production of Styrofoam in Ghana. Our food packaging will be made from paper and also from aluminium material.”
