E/R: Kukurantumi Residents Attack Police Station After Suspect Death In Custody

Some residents of Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region have attacked a police station after an arrested suspect died in police custody.

They are said to have attacked the Police station and the barracks with stones, clubs and other implements and attempted to set the building on fire on Sunday morning.

It followed the arrest of Bright Kena for a case of unlawful entry and stealing.

According to a statement by the police the suspect was on admission at the Community Hospital when he passed on.

A police reinforcement team was called in to restore calm, law and order, the police disclosed, adding that the Eastern Regional Police Command had engaged the deceased’s family and other community leaders to assure them of a thorough investigation into the matter.

“The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the suspect.”

Meanwhile, the police are reviewing video footages of the attack on the police station to identify the perpetrators and arrest them.

The statement furthered that the Kukurantumi Police Station has since been close down with all police personnel withdrawn.
