Unpaid Nurses to Get Accrued Salaries in November- Health Minister

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says the remaining 6,500 unpaid nurses across the country will receive their accrued salaries next month.

Speaking at a press conference, he said the cabinet had approved the payment.

“The Cabinet has approved that, starting from November, the Minister for Finance must pay them. I have in my hand the letter to that effect…I empathise with anybody who has had to go through this painful situation.”

The affected health workers poured onto the streets of Accra to demand payment of their salaries on October 2, 2025.

They were among 13,500 nurses whose financial clearance was received for recruitment in August 2024, but expired in December 2024.

“This meant that when the previous government was posting nurses, there was no financial provision available to cover their salaries.

“Instead of asking them to stay home, the current government allowed the nurses to continue working while provisions were made for their payment…This is a result of special concessions made by the government to retain the nurses,” the Ministry explained in an earlier statement.
