We’ll Advise Ourselves If Blamed for Deaths Due to Lack of Basic Healthcare Requirements – TTH Doctors

Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) say they will not shoulder blame over deaths resulting from the absence of basic health care delivery requirements.

The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) in a statement said they are weighing their options after the Minister for Health, Hon Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, tried laying the blame for the death of a patient on the medical personnel at the facility.

“We wish to state unequivocally that if the current trend where basic requirements for health care are unavailable, only for health personnel to be vilified for poor outcomes, we will advise ourselves and take actions that may not guarantee industrial harmony.”

In this spirit, they will convene an emergency meeting of all doctors of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

It said the meeting will be used to consider their options and next line of action.

Meanwhile, it defended the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department of the facility who incurred the wrath of the Minister over an alleged “rude attitude” during an interaction over the deceased patient in question.

“In his attempt to explain the condition of the patient and the challenges encountered in his management, the discussion degenerated and led to some verbal exchanges. We would like to state that, our colleague has worked tirelessly to support patient care at the accident and emergency and has always discharged his duties professionally and diligently.”

It further affirmed its support for the doctor.
“While we await the outcome of the committee of enquiry formed to investigate the matter, the DATTH would want to reiterate its unwavering support for our colleague who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in his unit and whose only crime was to point out problems in the facility needing urgent attention to improve care. We stand in strong solidarity with our colleague and will resist any action to hamper his ability to discharge his duties.”
