Ghanaian Oncology Nurse Wins Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025

Ghanaian oncology nurse practising at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, has been adjudged winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025.

The event was held in Dubai on May 26, 2025.

She emerged the winner from over 100,000 entries across 199 countries, clinching the coveted $250,000 prize for her exceptional contributions to oncology nursing and healthcare leadership in Ghana and beyond.

In her speech, she said the award was a recognition of the resilience, compassion and leadership of nurses across Ghana, Africa and the world at large while she openly gave glory to God for the honour.

“Over two decades ago, I began my nursing journey with a simple mission: ease pain, bring hope and walk along those battling cancer. In sub-Saharan Africa, I have witnessed firsthand the inequalities in cancer care, especially in the under-resourced communities but I have also seen the immense potential of nurses to lead transformative change.”

According to her, her passion for oncology nursing was born out of a desire to break this gap and deliver compassionate, high-quality care to those who need it most.

She sees the award as a “catalyst” for lasting change and is therefore committed to using it to amplify the voices of African nurses, expand access to cancer care and build a legacy of leadership and excellence in oncology across our continent.

She shared the award with patients she had served, nurses she had mentored and colleagues who joined in this vision of equity in cancer care.

“This award affirms that dream and empowers me to do even more. It is more than a recognition.”
