Otumfuo Announces Reconstitution of Asanteman Standing Committee

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced plans to reconstitute the Asanteman Standing Committee, citing its current inactivity as a major factor enabling misconduct across parts of Asanteman.
Speaking at the Asanteman Council meeting on April 20, 2026, Otumfuo said the Standing Committee, an executive organ of the Council, must be revived to restore order and enforce traditional authority.
“The Committee is currently inactive, giving room for misbehaviour in some Asanteman jurisdictions in the Bono Region,” His Majesty stated.
To rebuild the structure, Otumfuo directed traditional rulers within the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Asante Akyem areas to convene and nominate two representatives each.
The nominees will be responsible for reporting issues within their regions directly to the Standing Committee.
The reconstituted Committee, Otumfuo explained, will take up these matters by engaging and confronting the relevant authorities to ensure corrective action.
“When the need be, a delegation from the Committee will engage the person of interest, the National House of Chiefs, or even the President and hear from them. The Committee will deal with issues before they get here,” he said.
Impact of Committee Inactivity
Otumfuo observed that the dormancy of the Standing Committee has allowed gross misbehaviour to fester in towns including Sampa, Nkyeraa, Amantim, and parts of Asante Akyem.
“There is a court ruling in favour of Amantimhene, yet there is someone exerting his authority as chief, resisting the legitimate chief. The same is taking place in Nkyeraa, which has been adopted as a Divisional Council in the House of Chiefs,” he noted.
He also cited the situation in Sampa saying, “Despite court rulings, an Ivorian is in Sampa carrying himself out as a royal and chief. Sampahene Gyafla will not die. The town belongs to him, and he will assume his rightful authority.”
Otumfuo said the reconstitution will empower Asanteman to clamp down on such insurrections and protect the integrity of stools.
The Standing Committee will serve as the first line of engagement, resolving disputes and defending traditional jurisdictions before matters escalate to the full Asanteman Council.
