Ghana Must Prioritise Football and Athletics Over Other Sports- Kwabena Agyei Agyepong

An aspiring flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has suggested the channelling of Ghana’s focus and resources into developing football and athletics as sports.
Acknowledging other sports, he argued that football and athletics have, over the years, proven to be the country’s gold mine, and thereby the need to prioritise them.
“There has to be a deliberate attempt to revive our sports. I think Ghana is known and strong for soccer and athletics. We should promote other sports, but our focus must be fixed on these two. They have made Ghana popular.”
Promise to Revive Local Football
The politician, in an interview on Nkwantananso Show on October 14, 2025, expressed his unhappiness with the current state of local football.
“When Kotoko hosted their recent Africa Cup campaign in Accra, I watched it. I was saddened by the patronage.”
He has committed to reviving the love for local football among Ghanaians when he is given the mandate to lead the country after his success at the party level.
“If the Lord wills and I get the mandate, I will bring the passion back to football in this country. Someone in Juaben supports Aston Villa. I don’t understand. We are patronising the football of the whites. You won’t go to Spain to hear them talk about Kotoko.”
As his strategy, he said, “If given the mandate, I will send the football back to the Presidency just like Nkrumah and Ohene Djan did in those days. We have to be conscious about it.”
