Where Is Govt’s Concrete Plan to Stop Recurring Market Fires? – Ashanti NPP MPs

New Patriotic Party MPs from the Ashanti Region have questioned the government’s efforts to put a stop to the recurring fire outbreaks in the various markets in recent times.

Reacting to the recent outbreaks at the Suame Post Office, the Secretary to the Ashanti NPP Parliamentary Caucus, Vincent Ekow Assafuah Esq., described the trend as “worrying”.

“In recent months, the Ashanti Region has suffered repeated market fires, each time destroying years of hard work and investment by ordinary Ghanaians. These fires have become one too many, and the people of Ashanti deserve more than routine words of sympathy and empty promises,” he wrote in a statement.

“We are compelled to ask: where is the urgency, where is the accountability, and where is the concrete plan from the government to stop these recurring disasters? Traders cannot continue to watch their sweat and toil reduced to ashes while authorities respond with business-as-usual attitudes.”

The Caucus demanded a full-scale, transparent investigation into the Suame fire, Emergency relief and compensation packages for affected traders; and Urgent implementation of modern fire safety infrastructure in our markets, including hydrants, surveillance systems, and dedicated fire posts.

It also wants a clear policy framework to permanently address the spate of market fires across the Ashanti Region.
