Sports Ministry Congratulates Black Queens On WAFCON Qualification
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has congratulated Coach Nora Hauptle’s side for qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament after missing out on the previous one.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports wishes to congratulate the Senior National Female Football team, the Black Queens for their resilience and perseverance in the qualifiers for the 2024 CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations Tournament which will be staged in Morocco,” it said in a statement.
The Ministry is impressed with the performance so far of the Queens despite narrowly missing out on the 2024 tournament due to their loss to Namibia in the final leg of the qualifier.
The Queens lost 1-0 to Namibia at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in South Africa on Tuesday but progressed on a 3:2 aggregate.
“The team made an impressive showing in the qualifiers after beating Rwanda on a 12:0 aggregate, scoring 15 goals and conceding 2 goals. We wish the team the very best of luck in the journey ahead and believe they will make the whole nation proud at the CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations Tournament next year.”
The Black Queens failed to make it to the 2022 tournament after their last in 2018.
They will be attempting their first win after placing third both in 2004 and 2016, second in 2006, getting eliminated at the group stages in 2008, 2010 and 2018 and not qualifying in 2012.
