Sports Minister Kofi Adams Admits Ghana Not Fully Ready for 2026 World Cup

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has admitted that the nation is not fully prepared for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite ongoing efforts and substantial financial support for the Black Stars.

The Black Stars endured a disappointing March international window, suffering heavy defeats in both friendlies – losing 5-1 to Austria in Vienna and 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart. The poor results ultimately led to the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo.

The Ghana Football Association has since begun the search for a new coach, with less than three months remaining before the tournament kicks off in June.

Despite the setbacks, the government has committed significant resources to the campaign. A total of $30 million has been allocated to support Ghana’s participation, with $16 million specifically earmarked for the Black Stars team.

However, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency believes there is still work to be done in certain areas to ensure the team is adequately prepared.

“I can’t say we are 100% ready, but we have set systems in place that we will be ready when we have to be ready,” he said.

The minister also highlighted that the World Cup goes beyond just the matches on the pitch, stressing the importance of using the tournament to promote the country.

“The World Cup goes beyond the team… there are several activations you want to do because you want to also promote the country beyond just the 90 minutes they will play.”

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. They will face Mexico and Wales in upcoming friendlies as they continue their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
