SONA: We’ve Strengthened Cedi to Overcome Other Currencies- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says the cedi has been given the requisite support and enhancement to resist major international currencies.

According to him, the stability of the cedi was prioritised, leading to its impressive performance lately.

“We made currency stability a priority, and we have delivered. We did not arrest the dollar; we strengthened the cedi to put up a good fight against other currencies,” he told Parliament on February 27, 2026, while delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

He reported that the cedi had appreciated significantly by 40.7% against the United States dollar, 30.9% against the British pound sterling and 24% against the Euro.

He cited tighter fiscal management, productivity-enhancing reforms, and measures to restore credibility in economic governance for the progress.

“Ghana’s economic turnaround is broad-based and comprehensive. All sectors of the Ghanaian economy have witnessed remarkable improvement in our first year in office,” he said.

Meanwhile, he reported that the economy had surpassed the 100 billion mark and anticipated that Ghana could soon rank among Africa’s top ten largest economies, signalling renewed confidence in the country’s economic trajectory.
