Seychelles Church Which Hosted Prempeh I Confirmation To Be Turned Into Museum

President of Seychelles, H.E. Wavel Ramkalawan has disclosed plans by the country to repurpose the church that hosted the sacrament of Holy Communion and Confirmation of Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I into a Museum.

Following his exile to Seychelles in 1900 at the age of 26, history has it that he gained interest in Christianity over time and got baptised at Anglican Church of Victoria in 1904, confirmed in 1921 and received his first communion on Christmas day in 1921.

Speaking at a durbar organized on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of his return home, the President announced paper works for the initiative had already begun.

The aim is to keep alive the memory, legacy and impact of the late King in Seychelles.

“We will be turning the very chapel in which King Prempeh I received the sacrament of holy communion and confirmation into a Museum. This has already been accepted. I have signed the papers and the presence of King Prempeh I will continue to live on. To further the legacy of King Prempeh I, the project has already began.”

Meanwhile, in Kumasi, the 16th Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has begun processes to turn a cottage where the late King used to take rest following his return, into a Museum. It is located around the Prempeh I International Airport.

The durbar at the Manhyia Palace on November 23, 2024, followed a Symposium on November 22.

Chairing the event was the Asantehene alongside his mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa.

Present at the event were Nananom, First Lady of Seychelles, H.E. Linda Ramkalawan, Prime Minister of Eswatini, Russell Mmiso Dlamini, former President, John Agyekum Kufuor, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Seychelles, Francisca Ashietey-Odunton, Founder of Movement for Change, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and may others.
