Senegal FA Takes AFCON Title Dispute to CAS After CAF Ruling

Senegal has moved to challenge CAF’s decision to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, confirming plans to file an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The West African side had originally secured a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final after extra time, with Pape Gueye netting the winner following a missed penalty by Morocco late in regulation time.

CAF’s Appeal Jury, however, reviewed the circumstances surrounding the game and ruled that Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84, leading to a forfeiture and a 3-0 result in favour of Morocco.

The verdict came after an appeal by the Moroccan FA, with CAF officially announcing on March 17 that Morocco are the new champions of the tournament.

Senegal’s Football Federation has strongly opposed the outcome and confirmed it will seek justice through CAS. The body described the ruling as “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable”.

“To defend the rights and interests of Senegalese football, the federation announces it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, with an emergency procedure to be initiated as soon as possible,” part of the statement read.

“The Federation reaffirms its commitment to the values of integrity and sporting justice and will keep the public informed of the follow-up to this matter.”

The case is now set to head to CAS, where a final decision could bring closure to one of the most controversial AFCON finals in recent history.
