Security Intensified In Bawku after Fatal Unrest- Police

The Ghana Police Service says security has been intensified in conflict-prone Bawku in the Upper East Region following a clash between police and some youth.
The violence on April 9 resulted in the death of one person and injury to five persons including two security officers.
“One person, Fuseini Iddrisu, unfortunately, lost his life during the incident. Five other persons including one police officer and one Immigration officer sustained gunshot injuries and are on admission receiving medical attention,” it said in a statement.
It also confirmed that damage was also caused to some properties including two police vehicles and the official and private residences of policemen in the Binduri.
As part of efforts to restore calm, the Service said military and police officers have been deployed to town.
“Security has since been intensified at Bawku and surrounding communities as joint police and military patrol continues.”
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has since departed for Bawku to personally ascertain the security situation on the ground.
He was accompanied by operations, investigations and intelligence officers.
As part of the visit, he will commiserate with the bereaved family, visit injured officers at the hospital and sympathise with officers who lost their private residences in the violence.
In a related development, it has been reported that the residence of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has been torched.
Yesterday, he issued a statement condemning the shooting of some youth by the police and distanced himself from the operations of the police.
