Samuel Eto’o Apologises Over His Viral Violent Attack In Qatar

Cameroonian football administrator and former player, Samuel Eto’o has issued an apology for attacking and kneeing someone in a viral video.

The incident took place on Monday at Stadium 974 after the game between South Korea and Brazil in the 2022 World Cup tournament.

In the viral video, the former Barcelona and Inter Milan star was spotted taking selfies with some fans.

Suddenly a man emerges with his camera and says something that throws Eto’o into a frenzy mode.

He subsequently kneed the man as he fell to the ground.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Eto’o said his victim is an Algerian.

“On last 5 December, after the Brazil-South Korea match, I had a violent altercation with a person who was probably an Algerian supporter. I would like to apologise for losing my temper and reacting in a way that does not match my personality. I apologise to the public for this unfortunate incident.”

He recounted, “Indeed, since the Cameroon-Algeria match on 29 March in Blida, I have been the target of insults and allegations of cheating without any evidence.

“During this World Cup, Cameroonian fans have been harassed and pestered by Algerians on the same subject. I would like to mention that the scenario of Algeria’s defeat was cruel but perfectly in line with the rules and ethics of our sport.”

He pledged to continue to resist the relentless provocation and daily harassment of some Algerian supporters.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) contested the World Cup play-off second leg against Cameroon over what they described as “scandalous” refereeing decisions in March this year after Algeria’s quest toward the 2022 tournament was quashed.

The FAF requested a replay of the match and an investigation by FIFA “to shed light on the arbitration of the Algeria-Cameroon match”.

The appeal of the FAF was, however, rejected by FIFA.

In his apology statement, Eto’o called on FAF to put an end to the “unhealthy climate before a more serious tragedy occurs”.
