Sammy Gyamfi Files ₵10m Suit Against pro-NPP News Outlet, Reporters

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has filed a lawsuit against four for publishing defamatory statements about him concerning an alleged “lavish trip to Miami”.

The defendants include Asaase Radio, ABC News, Wilberforce Asare and Michael Afriyie.

The politician is, among other things, demanding ₵10 million in damages for what he calls a defamatory statement, an apology and retraction from the defendants on their respective outlets as well as a publication of their retraction in the Daily Graphic Newspaper.

Background

It was reported that Sammy had gone on a two-week lavish trip to Miami with his wife at the expense of the NDC. Some media outlets reported that he was “blowing” some $42 million from the party’s coffers at Betsy Hotel, a 5-star hotel, located on Miami Beach.

Reacting to the allegations, he said, the video mistakenly shared online was from his honeymoon and not recent as claimed in the publications. Though he said he had been to Miami a couple of times, he denied knowledge of the said hotel as he called the claims ridiculous.

“I’ve never been to the hotels they talked about. I’ve never heard of them. I’ve never stayed in Miami for two weeks. I’ve been to Miami a couple of times just like many other States in the US. The video they are circulating is one of the videos from my past trips with my wife. I believe in the immediate aftermath of my marriage.”
