Samartex Sympathise With Legon Cities

Samartex FC have sympathised with Legon Cities, their colleagues in the betPawa Premier League following their encountered highway robbery last night.

Legon Cities were traveling in their bus back to Accra after a match against Samartex when the incident occurred.

In a statement, Samartex said, “We are deeply saddened by the armed robbery attack that occurred on the entire contingent of Legon Cities after our league game yesterday. The entire team at Samartex SC would like to express our profound sympathy and unity with you during this challenging time.”

Other clubs have publicly reached out to the Cities to express their sympathies.

Aduana Football Club tweeted, “Our thoughts are with you after the unfortunate incident you faced on your way back from Samreboi. Wishing you safety and support during this difficult time.”

Real Tamale United (RTU) also posted, “Not the best of news to receive from your end this morning, but we stay fully with you in these difficult times. Grateful you arrived safely🙏🏿.”

Robbery

The team including players and officials were ambushed by armed robbers along the Bibiani – Kumasi highway around 11 p.m.

In a press statement, the club confirmed, “On our way back to Accra after honouring the Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex, our team was attacked by armed robbers at Toase.”

The team gave up belongings including phones, laptops and money, said the club which also noted that the team was back in Accra safely.

Meanwhile, they are yet to file an official complaint with the police.

Pictures from the scene showed a smashed driver’s side window while Osman Amadu was pictured in another picture with a bandaged hand.

Similar Incidents
This is not the first time the club has suffered a highway robbery. Before rebranding as Legon Cities, the then Wa All Stars suffered a similar fate while journeying for a clash against Hearts of Oak in 2008.

Other clubs including Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold have had their own history of the robbery.

In March 2022, the team bus of suspended Club Ashantigold was attacked while returning home after a match against Hearts of Oak while Asante Kotoko SC during their lodge at a hotel in Accra in 2015 ahead of a match against Hearts of Oak became victims.
