Sam George Orders Closure of Gumah Radio in Bawku

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George has ordered the immediate shutdown of Gumah FM Station in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

The Ministry in a statement cited urgent national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for the decision taken at an emergency meeting on February 11, 2025.

This, it said, is in accordance with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which empowers the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend or revoke frequency authorisations in the interest of national security, public order, or the public interest.

“REGSEC extensively reviewed recent security developments in Bawku and parts of the North East Region…Intelligence reports indicate that Gumah FM Station has been used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in the region.”

The Ministry has thus directed that the radio station cease all operations with immediate effect.

It added that it is monitoring to prevent the establishment of alternative platforms that may be used to propagate violence or further destabilize the region.

The Ministry further urged all media entities to operate responsibly and in strict adherence to their frequency authorisation conditions, affirming that the Government is committed to safeguarding national security, public safety, and the rule of law.
