Sagrenti War: Asantehemaa Graces Kuntunkuni Dubar
The Queen of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Hemaa Konadu Yiadom III, has graced the Sagrenti War commemoration durbar ongoing at the Manhyia Palace.
The 90-year-old’s majestic arrival caught the eyes, traditionally coded in elegance and customs, riding on a palanquin.
With some solemn traditional royal dance displays, the Queen made her way to pay homage to her younger brother, the King, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Also gracing the event is the wife of the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Lady Julia Osei Tutu.
Attendants are clad in black outfits to resonate with the name of the durbar, Kuntunkuni, which is in recognition of the Sagrenti War of 1784 which saw the destruction of Kumasi, and the perishing of many Asante soldiers.
The war staged by the British against the Asantes was mainly aimed at taming the Asantes who had proven a hindrance in the operations of the former in the then Gold Coast.
Other attendees include Vice President Mahamudu Bwumia, Second Lady Samira Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin, former President John Dramani Mahama, Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Hon Akosuah Fremah Opare, British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E Harriet Thompson, the Head of the Centre of West African Studies at Birmingham University and Prof Tom McCaskie.
