Roman Fada to Replace Akua Donkor on Ballot Paper
Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has nominated its Vice Presidential candidate, broadcast journalist Philip Appiah Kubi popularly known as Roman Fada to replace deceased Presidential candidate Akua Donkor on the 2024 Presidential ballot paper.
This was officially communicated to the Electoral Commission (EC) in a letter on November 4, 2024.
It follows a directive by the EC for the party to select and submit a candidate within 10 days.
“I hereby write to inform the Electoral Commission that the party has duly elected Philip Appiah Kubi to replace our late Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections. His name is hereby submitted to the Commission in line with your request.”
It is prepared to file nomination within the stipulated time frame.
The only female presidential candidate in this year’s election passed away at the Ridge Hospital on Monday, October 28, 2024, while receiving treatment.
Her death prompted the EC to halt the printing of the ballot papers which were nearing completion to enable the GFP to nominate a candidate in her stead.
Directing the party to elect a replacement, it explained that the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a Presidential Candidate.
However, it noted that Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution provides that “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”
