Remove The ¢1 Fuel Levy Or We Park Our Cars Next Week- Transport Operators

Commercial transport operators have threatened industrial action if the newly imposed ¢1 fuel levy is not rescinded.
At a press briefing on June 5, 2025, the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) representing all transport unions in the country warned that members would park their cars on June 10 if the government ignored their request.
They argued that the levy which comes after the recent reduction in transport fares would significantly impact their operations and urged the government to be considerate.
“We are, therefore, calling on the government to reverse the levy immediately and engage major stakeholders in the way forward. In the event that our call is not heeded to, we will be compelled to take industrial action and park our vehicles on June 10.”
The bill for the levy was presented and approved by parliament on June 3, 2025, with the government justifying that the action was necessary to cover an estimated US$1.8 billion required to finance fuel procurement for uninterrupted thermal power generation in the coming months.
It has, however, acknowledged the burden this will place on households and businesses.
President John Dramani Maham does not expect the levy to result in immediate fuel price increases at the pump due to the recent gains in macro stability and the strengthening of the Ghana cedi.
