Release Funds to Buy Scanners for 2024 WASSCE Marking; WAEC to Govt
One principal reason for the delay in the release of the 2024 West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by the examination body is the lack of scanners to scan the objective scripts for marking.
According to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), all its scanners have broken down therefore stalling the scanning process which was supposed to start on November 1.
A part of a statement issued by the Council following concerns about the delay read, “The scanning of objective cards which was scheduled to start on November 1 and end on November 30 is yet to be completed due to the breakdown of scanners used for the process.”
It has thus requested payment of funds due them by the government to purchase new machines to undertake the process.
“The Council is awaiting the release of additional funds out of the outstanding balance of ₵118,000,000 from the Ministry of Education for repair of the scanners to enable the scanning process and other post-election process to continue smoothly.”
Some of these funds would be used to settle examination officials and suppliers, it noted as it urged them to exercise restraint.
Meanwhile, the public has been advised to disregard fake dates circulating on social media for the release of the results.
It noted that the results would be released when the outstanding challenges are resolved.
