Proving Royal Status Isn’t About Documents But Family Tree- Asantehene

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has affirmed that documents are not the ultimate proof for one’s royal status and eligibility to ascend a traditional stool.
According to the King, the most suitable and undisputable evidence is the family tree.
Addressing the Asanteman Council on December 15, 2025, Otumfuo noted that every traditional stool can be traced to one woman for whom the stool was created.
The direct descendants of this person become the true heirs.
“Royalty is not about documents. At the time of the creation of the stool, there was nothing like paperwork. The descendants of the woman for whom it was created are the royals and bona fide owners of the stool.”
Otumfuo said this while explaining the intricacies of royalty when the family of the Queen of Awua Dumase Traditional Area, Nana Owusuwaa Ayeboafo, presented “Dibim” on her behalf.
His Majesty explained to them that from the analysis of the family tree, the Queen is not a royal, adding that the late chief, Nana Kwame Korang, who enstooled her, was also not related to the royal bloodline.
“He was a descendant of a male royal and therefore cannot assume a royal stool. The stool is not paternal.”
The ‘Dibim’ became necessary after the Queen, who invoked the Great Oath to defend herself against a challenge, was found guilty following a thorough probe.
Rendering a judgment on July 10, 2025, His Majesty said the stool was a royal one and therefore an entitlement of nephews, not children.
For the absence of the Queen during their meeting, it was explained that she was recovering from a recent surgery.
