Prison Officers Shine At Ghana Masters Athletics Championship

Eight officers of the Ghana Prisons Service have recorded an impressive performance at the Ghana Masters Athletics Open Championship held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, winning a total of 14 medals.

The officers, drawn from Kumasi Central, Manhyia Local and Obuasi Local Prisons, competed in the championship organised by the Royal Sports Arena in collaboration with the Ghana Masters Association.

The event also served as a qualifying competition for the 2026 World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Under the guidance of Chief Coach, Senior Chief Officer Kwabena Asogah, the athletes aged between 39 and 45 excelled in track events including the 100m, 200m, 800m and 1,500m races.

Their medal haul comprised five gold, seven silver and two bronze medals, highlighting the strength and discipline of the Service’s athletics team.

Leading the medal winners were Chief Officer Emmanuel Aryee, Sergeants Roland Alena Tengan, Asante Hayford, Stephen Amankrah, Emmanuel Nimo, Christian Afful, Mohammed Iddrisu and Seidu Dramani, with notable victories in the sprint and middle-distance events.

Despite the success, Coach Asogah disclosed that the team faced several challenges in preparation, including logistical constraints, limited training equipment and difficulties in securing timely release of officers for training.

He also called for greater support and the recruitment of younger athletes, especially females, into the Service’s sports programme.

Coach Asogah expressed optimism that with adequate support, the Ghana Prisons Service would emerge as a strong contender at the World Masters Championships in 2026.
