Police Probe Double Assault Claims at ‘Save the Judiciary’ Demo

The Ghana Police Service says it is investigating assault allegations reported during Monday’s ‘Save the Judiciary’ Demo in Accra.

The protest was held by a coalition of opposition political parties to register displeasure at the President’s suspension of the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Videos from the event captured the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, striking a police officer.

In a petition, the lawmaker alleged he was first assaulted by the officer before he was captured confronting him for his “unprofessional” conduct.

A statement by the police said investigations have commenced into the two allegations, adding that the legislator honoured its invitation on Wednesday.

“Following a request to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Hon. Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police today, 7th May, 2025, to assist the investigations.”

It furthered, “Investigation has also commenced into a petition received from Hon. Afenyo-Markin alleging he was assaulted by the Police officer concerned. Both investigations are ongoing, and the public will be updated as the case progresses.”
