Police Officer Subjected To Disciplinary Action Over Military Comment
The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare has subjected Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Gabriel Prince Waabu to a disciplinary process over an “unfortunate” statement he made on Monday.
This follows DCOP Prince Waabu’s assertion that the military would be excluded from the security outfit put up for the general elections slated for later this year.
“… whatever happened in 2020, a lesson has been learnt out of it. We’re not maybe going to involve the military, as it were because it was not even the police that came out with this issue. So, it’s going to be only the police, the prisons, fire and then immigration that are going to conduct this election. They are going to support us; it is our baby,” he is quoted to have said.
However, in a counter statement, the Ghana Police Service discredited the statement noting the National Elections Security Taskforce Architecture has the Ghana Armed Forces and all other state security agencies recruited.
“The attention of the Ghana Police Service has been drawn to an unfortunate statement made by DCOP Mr Gabriel Prince Waabu during a panel discussion on JoyNews, today, Monday 19th February 2024.
“The statements made by DCOP Mr Gabriel Prince Waabu concerning election security are unfounded and do not represent the position of the Ghana Police Service. We would therefore like to disassociate the Ghana Police Service completely from the statements and apologize to the Ghana Armed Forces. The conduct of the officer is being subjected to internal disciplinary processes of the Ghana Police Service.”
