Phone Repairers Nabbed For Unlocking Phones Sold on Credit to Defaulters

Two phone repairers using specialised software to help defaulting buyers unlock phones they have bought on credit have been arrested.
Machiavelli Arthur and Gideon Ebenezer were arrested in Wassa Akropong on June 19, 2025.
“The Ghana Police Service, through an intelligence-led operation, has arrested two suspects for illegally tampering with mobile phone devices belonging to a credit sales company at Wassa Akropong in the Western Region,” the police said in a statement.
According to the police, the suspects used laptops and other devices to unlock, bypass, and flash mobile phones that had been sold on credit, enabling customers who defaulted on payments to continue using the phones without settling their debts.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects admitted to using specialized software on their laptops to carry out the illegal activities.”
The police have since retrieved laptops and other electronic devices used for unlocking and flashing the phones.
They are currently in police custody assisting in investigations and will be put before court.
