Outrage After NDC Northern Regional Sec Appointment as Acting NLA CEO
A section of the Muslim community in Ghana has expressed anger towards the government after President John Dramani Mahama appointed the Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mohammed Abdul Salam, as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).
The appointment took effect on January 15, 2025, pending receipt of the Constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
This has since sparked outrage among some Muslims in the country as they argue that the dictates of Islam are against the practice of lottery.
Some have taken to social media to vent their anger at the government while the appointee is being earnestly urged to reject it.
One Facebook user chastised the appointment describing it as a slap at Islam.
“Bra you can’t accept this job for the sake of Allah, and the appointing authority, the Muslim community feels this kind of appointment is a slap to our faith. We plead for a withdrawal of this appointment.”
Another Muslim, also on Facebook vented out saying, “If the reports are anything to go by then we condemn this appointment. And we will be very disappointed if he accepts the appointment.
He continued, “This is something that was stated clearly in plain language in the Quran: O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; avoid them, that you may succeed.”
Meanwhile, some Muslims have congratulated the NDC regional executive for the appointment.
