Our Economists Are Only Good At Theories
Dr. Eric Bimpong, a lecturer at KAAF University College has raised significant concerns regarding the practical capabilities of Ghanaian economists, shedding light on a prevailing issue within the country’s economic landscape.
In an interview on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantannanso with Kofi Boakye, he expressed frustration over what he perceives as disparity between the theoretical prowess and practical application of Ghana’s economists. While acknowledging their proficiency in formulating economic theories, he lamented a prevalent trend where economists excel in academia but struggle when confronted with practical scenarios in the field.
“We have fantastic economists in Ghana. When it comes it theory, we can propound but when it comes to the practicals, that’s where the problem is. If after 67 years, this is how we are, then there is no hope for Ghana.”
According to Dr Bimpong, Ghana’s economic challenges demand economists who can effectively apply their knowledge to address pressing issues.
He highlighted that while other countries leverage partnerships between academia and industry to drive innovation and economic growth, Ghana has yet to fully embrace this approach. As a result, valuable research and insights generated by Ghanaian universities remain underutilized, hindering the country’s progress towards emerging economy status.
“In countries where they are emerging economies, they have combined industries and academia. In Ghana, how many thesis or project work haven’t we done? Go to KNUST, under economics department, the number of research they have done that are lying in dust.”
