Otumfuo Honoured In Trinidad And Tobago
It was a sight to behold as His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, July 30, 2023, on a state visit.
He was met at the Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain by Senator Honourable Dr Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds, Minister of National Security, Senator Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry and the Senator Honourable Randall Mitchell, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts.
He also received a salute from the country’s quarter guard before he was taken to a designated waiting room for a respite from his hours-long flight.
At the hotel where he will be lodging for the next five days, he was welcomed by a crowd and ushered in by traditional Kete performers.
Among the crowd were some members of the Ghanaian community as well as natives.
His Majesty is in Trinidad and Tobago on a state visit following an invitation by Prime Minister Keith Rowley in 2020 and a follow-up invite earlier this year.
He will return to Ghana on August 5, 2023.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Government Communications department notes that Asante’s royal ties to the country can be dated to 1881 with the arrival of Prince Kofi Nti, son of King Kofi Karikari, the tenth King of the Asante Empire.
Prince Kofi Nti is credited with the design of a Signal Station which was built at Fort St. George, Port of Spain in 1883.
