Otumfuo Appeals to Nayiri to Accept Asigri Abugrago Azoka as Chief of Bawku

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appealed to the Overlord of Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai, to accept Asigri Abugrago Azoka as the Bawku Naba as stipulated by the Constitution and Supreme Court ruling.

Presenting the mediation report on the Bawku Conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis, to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on December 16, 2025, he stated that traditional authorities no matter their power are not above the Constitution of Ghana and the laws duly enacted and affirmed by the courts.

“I recommend that my brother the Nayiri accepts the law as presently constituting Asigri Abugrago Azoka as chief of Bawku and head chief of the Kusasi Traditional Area.”

His Majesty as part of his recommendations called for enforcement of the laws which recognises Asigri Abugrago Azoka.

This, Otumfuo noted, must be enforced by the government of the Republic of Ghana until there is a change in accordance with the 1992 Constitution or a review of the Supreme Court ruling.

The Asantehene therefore emphasised that the government deals sternly with anyone challenging the lawful authority of Asigri Abugrago Azoka.

“This is critical to the restoration and maintenance of peace in the Kusasi Traditional Area.”

As such, Otumfuo disclosed that he had been candid in stating that the purported enskinment of Mr. Seidu Abagre as Bawku Naba cannot stand.

“I believe my brother, the Nayiri, has come to terms with the difficulty that it will be a challenge to the lasting peace he desires.”

The Asantehene further revealed that, from the inception, he had restrained both the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government and the current Mahama administration from effecting the arrest of Mr. Seidu Abagre out of respect for his brother, the Nayiri.

“The final resolution of the Bawku matter requires that Mr. Abagre should report to Nalerigu to be reassigned to play another role at the Palace of the Nayiri, assisted by the state. Alternatively, he may choose to stay in Bawku as an ordinary citizen of the community, but not pose as Bawku Naba.”
