According to a statement from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), Elizabeth and Daniel took an amount of GHC 4,000 from their victims, a family of three- a mother, father and their one and half-year-old son- with the promise of processing documents for them to travel to Canada.

The statement said, “Elizabeth Arthur later informed the complainant that the documents were all ready but the complainant’s wife could not travel because she had become pregnant but could only travel after delivery.”

It added that she also told the head of the family he “could also travel after three days because there was a problem with his passport which must be worked on but his son could travel because there was nothing wrong with his documents and that the white man to take them to Canada would go ahead with the boy.”

The complainant later realised he had unknowingly given up his son for adoption through a document he later received. The culprits were arrested after the complainant reported the case at Devtraco Police Station. (Adipex)

After hearing the case, the Accra circuit court convicted the two and sentenced them to three years imprisonment each, the Ministry said.

Additionally, they have been fined an amount of GHC 12,000 each or serve additional 2 years imprisonment in default, MoGCSP said in a statement.
