Ongoing Sakumo Ramsar Site Constructions Must Cease Immediately- Lands Commission

The Lands Commission has issued a directive for all ongoing constructions and developments within the Sakumo Ramsar Site to cease with immediate effect.

In a statement issued on September 3, it announced the demolition of structures, beginning from within the core zone and 50 meters from the banks of stream/ river courses within the Ramsar Site.

The Commission noted that no land within the Sakumo Ramsar Site qualifies for private acquisition or development and thereby warned the public against engaging in any land transaction, either the purchase, lease or assignment, over the said area.

“All land documents or allocations purportedly issued to anyone within the Sakumo Ramsar Site are unlawful and will not be recognised by the Government.”

It added, “Persons found engaging in illegal land transactions or construction within the Ramsar Site will be prosecuted and the structures demolished.”

The statement explained that the area is a designated conservation area, safeguarded due to its critical ecological functions, rich biodiversity, and provision of environmental services.

It emphasised that it is a legally protected wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and the Wetlands Management (Ramsar Sites) Regulations, 1999 (LI 1659).

It therefore noted that all forms of encroachment, sale, or acquisition of land within this protected area are illegal.

“The Site controls floods by serving as natural sponges absorbing and storing excess rainwater, contributes to climate change mitigation, serves as an important breeding site for migratory birds and supports thousands of local livelihoods.”
