Okada Rider Shoots Queenmother to Death After “Consuming Narcotic-laced Sobolo”

A 21-year-old Okada rider has shot to death a female traditional leader in the Greater Accra Region at a naming ceremony after allegedly consuming a narcotic-laced local beverage.

Gilbert Awuni alias Starboy was reportedly among a group contracted to discharge locally manufactured firearms at the event on June 19, 2025.

He is said to have aimed and fired his weapon at close range, striking Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, the queen mother of Papaase in the head, killing her instantly.

Another victim identified as Priscilla Naa Aryeley was also shot in the chest.

“Police investigations revealed that the suspects had consumed sobolo drinks allegedly laced with narcotics at the ceremony before the shooting. Realizing he had committed the crime, Starboy fled the scene on a motorbike with his friend, known as Oxygen, and sought refuge in Asokore, Ashanti Region.”

He was fished out by a team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), led by the Unit Commander and reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Two other persons including the event organizer who allegedly instructed the use of firearms, have also been arrested.

While efforts are underway to recover the firearm used in the crime, the police confirmed that the injured victim is in a stable condition receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.
