Obuasi: AngloGold Ashanti Commissions Examination Printing Centre

The AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), Obuasi Mine, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, commissioned and handed over a GHC2,249,281 Examination Centre for Wawase community in the Obuasi East District district of the Ashanti Region through Ghana Education Service (GES).

The project funded by AngloGold is to contribute towards improving Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) pass rates in their host communities under the AngloGold 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP).

The project aimed at enhancing quality education, promoting sustainability, and fostering socio-economic development and also easing the pressure on the surrounding schools during printing of examination papers.

The facility is made up of Printing and Production Room, Printing Machinery, Offices , Storage Rooms and others.

The project became a reality after a series of engagements with stakeholders on how to sustain the periodic mock examinations geared towards preparing BECE candidates for their main examination.

At the commissioning, Mr Edmond Oduro Adjei, Senior Manager Sustainability – Community Relations for AngloGold stressed that, the company continuously strives to uphold the purpose of mining to empower people and advance the various people at Obuasi.

According to him, the commissioning of the Exam Printing Centre is just one of the several initiatives just to ensure that the youth succeed and improve on quality of education.

He explained that to seek a permanent solution to aid students prepare, AGA believes that the printing centre would be the most practical solution to support students, especially the final years.

Mr Adjei noted that, the printers installed can sort, arrange, print and staple up to 100 pages per minute.

He said he is of the firm conviction that the printing centre would ensure that examination papers are produced accurately and efficiently, thereby reducing the chances of errors or discrepancies in the papers.

Adding that it will again help maintain the integrity of the examination process and ensure a fair assessment for all students.

The Senior Manager emphasized that the examination printing centre will contribute to a more organized and reliable examination system which can benefit both the school examiners and students.

He noted that, since the launch of the SEDP, the AngloGold Ashanti has equipped over 500 teachers with leadership skills and innovative ways to effectively deliver lessons in classrooms.

In addition, he said, it has distributed over 100,000 copies of learning materials to basic schools in order to supplement the teachers’ training.

Mr Kwabena Owusu Nketia, the District Education Director for Obuasi East in a speech urged all stakeholders to continue to rally behind AngloGold Ashanti for the continued efforts in the development of education at Obuasi.

He explained that it is a collective responsibility to provide educational support to aid the government’s efforts in the development of education in Ghana.

Mrs Faustina Amissah, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Obuasi East commended the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine for their continued commitment to improving quality education in the area.

She also urged stakeholders to continue to pray for New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to be able to achieve its targets.
