Obi Man So: Immigrant Share A Disheartening Ordeal

A 55-year-old man, Mr Kwadwo Afrifa, an indigene of Asante Mampong Benim in the Ashanti Region, has recounted his disheartening ordeal over his intention to go to Spain in search of greener pastures.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Barima Yeboah Asuamah on Opemsuo Radio’s first edition of “Obi man so” (The Diaspora), a programme which focuses on diaspora affairs, on Sunday, December 4, 2022, Mr Afrifa disclosed that he was motivated to go to foreign countries due to the fact that there are greener pastures there.

According to Mr Kwadwo Afrifa, he is a house-wiring electrician by profession.

He revealed that he was tempted to travel to Germany in 2006, but that the trip turned out to be futile.

“I was advised by my friends to go to Mankessim and hire a vehicle that takes passengers straight to The Gambia,” he disclosed.

Mr Afrifa said it took the passengers on board ten days to reach “The Gambia” after paying the transit fees, all to go to Spain.

According to him, they reached Senegal in the process while going to Spain.

“Fear gripped me immediately after we crossed Hemile, Ghana’s northern border with Burkina Faso, and I was remorseful, but then I couldn’t do anything on the crossroad,” he expressed worry.

He went on to say that, having gotten to the ocean, he and others got lost in the deep sea of Senegal while on a cannon boat in a week and eventually appeared in Cape Verde.

“I got another travel link, and on the way, there was a massacre operation on the Senegal Sea by the rebels in search of human parts for their rituals,” he disclosed.

Mr Afrifa said there were about 180 people on board the cannon boat, looking forward to arriving in Spain in seven to ten days.

He indicated that the waves on the Deep Sea were heavy, which was uncontrollable and deadly.

“Senegal rebels who were giving us food initially stopped; they stabbed one of my friends on his neck, slaughtered him, and removed his heart in front of me,” he revealed.
