Nurein Shaibu’s Parliamentary Candidacy Affirmed

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed the candidacy of their 2024 Parliamentary Candidate, Nurein Shaibu.

It comes after the national level leaders of the party annulled the withdrawal of his candidacy, which was issued by the Regional Chairman of the party, Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, last week

After hearing the case of the parties, the Committee ruled that the withdrawal was unlawful as the power to suspend a regional candidate does not reside in the Regional Chairman or the Regional Functional Executive Committee.

In addition to that it found that the reasons which underpinned the purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate are totally false and baseless.

“You played a lead role in the purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate in clear violation of express directives given to you by the General Secretary and the National Chairman of the party,” a letter issued by the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwtey told the Regional Chairman.

He added, “By publicly announcing your purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate knowing very well that same was without any legal or reasonable justification, you have engaged in clear anti-party behaviour and brought the name of the party into disrepute.”

Prof Asiedu has therefore been handed a one-month suspension and has been instructed to hand over to the Regional Vice Chairman, Hon. Ekow Okyere Panyin Eduamoah.

Background
The Regional Chairman on July 27 released a statement announcing a six-month suspension and withdrawal of the candidacy of Nurein in response to what he called reports of “immoral acts and anti-Party acts” by the candidate.

This decision, it said, was taken in consultation with executives at the national level after interrogations and deliberations on the reports.
