No One Has a Right to Make Commitments With a Traditional Stool- Asantehene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has reminded traditional authorities of the true owner of traditional stools under his realm.

“The stool belongs to me,” he said, adding that it can therefore not be used as an object for commitment-making in exchange for favours and other things.

“How come you went about making commitments with it in exchange for money?” he inquired.

Such acts, he noted, were a gross violation of tradition.

Otumfuo made these remarks during the Asanteman Council meeting on March 17, 2025, when the council reviewed the dispute between the Queen of Gyadam Traditional Area, Nana Kwartemaa Mmorongo and the kingmakers over the successor to the late chief, Nana Ayim Kumnipa.

It was found that the kingmakers promised the stool to the financier of the burial rite of the late chief- an agreement, they said, was reached alongside the Queen.

Making her case before the Council Nana Kwartemaa Mmorongo II, conceded that an agreement to go to the royal for money was reached during deliberations on how to fund the burial of the late traditional leader.

However, she fiercely contested that there was ever a clause in the agreement to enstool the said royal in exchange.

Otumfuo in his verdict faulted both parties for going against tradition in making a commitment with the stool and beseeching a royal for funds.

He thereby annulled all processes and commitments.

“Your commitments no longer stand. It is vain.”
