No One Died Over ₵2 At Lapaz As Reported; Station Official Says
It has turned out that no passenger has died over a GH₵2 transport fare increment at the Lapaz vehicle station as widely reported.
Daniel Boahen, the Lapaz bus station organiser in an interview said that the report which has gained mass media attention is false.
It was reported that a passenger who was heading to Pokuase died at Lapaz following a fisticuff with a driver and his bus conductor over a GH₵2 fare increment on Saturday, October 29, 2022.
The male passenger in his 30s was reported to have received a punch in his face which landed him right on the ground and hit his head on the pavement.
But an account from the station organiser proved the contrary.
In an interview, he said, “the driver decided to drop off the passengers he had picked from the station after the passenger in question and others began agitating about the new fare.”
Upon their return, he recalled, an argument ensued between the passengers and the bus conductor in the course of which the said passenger received a punch that sent him down on his back.
“He was drowsy when people tried helping him back onto his feet so they decided to take him to the hospital. On their way, he refused to continue the journey to the hospital. It seems he was drunk. No one died as reported”, he said.
According to Boahen, the general increment at the station ranges from 50ps to GHc1, contrary to reports that they fought over GhC2 increment.
