Newly Acquired Metro Mass Buses to Charge Lower Transport Fares

The government has directed that the newly acquired 100 buses be swiftly deployed to charge lower transport fares to cushion the public.

The new buses will work alongside existing buses on high-traffic corridors.

“Minister for Transport directed to ensure expedited deployment of recently acquired 100 Metro Mass Transit Buses in addition to existing ones on high-traffic corridors and ensure maintenance of LOWER TRANSPORT FARES on those buses than what private operators charge,” the Minister for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced.

The decision was one of the decisions taken by the cabinet on April 9, 2026.

The 100 buses are the first batch of a total of 300 purchased by the government to address recent challenges in the public transport system.

Another batch of 100 is expected to arrive in August, with the last batch of 100 arriving in November, he communicated.

Key among the decisions taken by the Cabinet on Thursday was a directive for the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to remove some taxes and margins on fuel to lower pump prices.

The removal will reflect in the next pricing window, which is in approximately one week.

“This will remain in effect for an initial period of four weeks,” the Jubilee House said in a statement.

President John Dramani Mahama also reaffirmed the ban on fuel allowances for all ministers and senior government officials.
