Newborn Babies Get Ghana Card Number From Dec- Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has announced babies born from December 2023 will automatically be bequeathed with unique identification numbers.

According to him, work on the system is completed and will be launched in the same month.

Speaking at the 57th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday, November 24, 2023, he said the new system was developed with the help of Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Births and Deaths Registry and the National Identification Authority (NIA).

“One of the interesting and remarkable pieces of work that has been done is the integration of the databases of the Ghana health service, the Births and Deaths registry and the National Identification Authority.

“We have completed that work and I am happy to say that next month I am going to launch a new system that will start working next month where every child born in Ghana from birth will be given a Ghana Card number.”

The move is meant to build an ecosystem that allows visibility in a spectrum, according to him.
